Water Damage behind the Built-In Cabinets

6/4/2024 (Permalink)

Build in Cabinets affected by water damage Flooding due to heavy rain storm affected the wall with a build in cabinet

Built-in cabinets, whether in kitchens, bathrooms, or living spaces, can harbor hidden dangers when it comes to water damage.

Built-in cabinets often house plumbing fixtures such as sinks, faucets, and dishwashers. Over time, leaks or drips from these fixtures can seep into the walls and cabinetry, causing water damage and fostering mold growth. Lack of proper ventilation and airflow exacerbates the problem, creating an ideal environment for mold and mildew.

Moisture trapped behind built-in cabinets creates a conducive environment for mold and mildew growth. Mold colonies not only damage surfaces and materials but also pose health risks to occupants.

If you are suspecting water traveled under or behind the build in cabinet we strongly recommend detaching of the cabinets to further investigate if moisture  infiltration occurred.

Crawlspace and standing water - What should you do?

6/1/2024 (Permalink)

Standing water in the crawlspace Heavy rains caused water intrusion in the crawlspace

Beneath the floorboards and between the foundation lies a seldom-visited yet crucial space known as the crawlspace. Often overlooked, this area plays a vital role in the structural integrity of a home. However, when standing water infiltrates the crawlspace, it can spell trouble for the entire structure.

When standing water accumulates in the crawlspace, whether due to poor drainage, plumbing leaks, or flooding, it can lead to a host of structural problems.

The crawlspace, typically found beneath homes with raised foundations, serves several essential functions:

  1. Foundation Support: The crawlspace provides access to plumbing, electrical wiring, and HVAC systems while also offering structural support to the foundation.

  2. Moisture Control: Proper ventilation and moisture management in the crawlspace help prevent issues such as mold growth, wood rot, and structural damage.

  3. Insulation: Insulation in the crawlspace helps regulate temperature and energy efficiency in the home, particularly in regions with extreme weather conditions.

Determine the source of the water, whether it's from heavy rain, plumbing leaks, or groundwater intrusion. Assess the depth of the water and identify any potential hazards, such as structural damage or mold growth.

Utilize a submersible pump to extract large volumes of water efficiently.

After removing standing water, focus on drying out the crawlspace to prevent mold growth and further damage using dehumidifiers and fans to remove excess moisture from the air.

Once the crawlspace is dry, conduct a thorough inspection to assess for any structural damage, mold growth, or moisture-related issues

Can water damage lead to mold?

5/1/2024 (Permalink)

Water damage inside the wall cavity The porous nature of building materials like drywall and insulation provides ample nutrients for mold to feed on, exacerbating the problem.

Water damage is often visible and alarming, but what about the damage we can't see?

When water infiltrates the walls of our homes, it can create the perfect breeding ground for mold, hidden from sight but lurking within wall cavities.

Water damage inside wall cavities occurs when moisture infiltrates the walls through various means, such as:

  1. Leaking Pipes: Burst or leaking pipes within walls can release water into the surrounding cavities.
  2. Roof Leaks: Roof leaks can allow water to seep down into walls, especially in multi-story homes.
  3. Poorly Sealed Windows or Doors: Improperly sealed windows or doors can allow rainwater to penetrate the walls during storms.
  4. Foundation Cracks: Cracks in the foundation can permit groundwater to seep into the walls from below.

Once water infiltrates the wall cavity, it can saturate insulation, drywall, and other porous materials, creating an environment ripe for mold growth. Remember, early detection and prompt action are key to mitigating risks and preserving the integrity of your home.

SERVPRO of Malibu is ready to assist you with any water damage or mold remediation needs.

What is a Slab Leak?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

Slab leak in the kitchen Slab leak under the kitchen island

A slab leak refers to a leak in one of the water lines running below the concrete slab foundation of a home. These leaks can occur in both hot and cold water lines, and they can stem from various causes, including corrosion, abrasion, or poor installation.

There are subtle signs that may indicate the presence of a slab leak:

  1. Mysterious Water Bills: A sudden and unexplained increase in your water bill could indicate water loss from a hidden leak.
  2. Warm Spots on Floors: If a hot water line is leaking, you might notice warm spots on your floor, particularly on tile or wood surfaces.
  3. Damp or Discolored Flooring: Moisture seeping up through the floor can cause carpets to feel damp or hardwood floors to warp. Discoloration or mold growth may also occur.
  4. Decreased Water Pressure: A leak in the main water line can lead to reduced water pressure throughout the house.
  5. Sound of Running Water: If you hear the sound of running water when all faucets are turned off, it could indicate water escaping from a hidden source.

Ignoring a slab leak is not an option, as the consequences can be severe and far-reaching.

Specialized equipment, such as electronic leak detection devices and thermal imaging cameras, can aid in pinpointing the precise location of a slab leak without the need for invasive excavation.

The Hidden Dangers of Under-Sink Water Filtration Systems

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

Water/Mold damage under the sink Visible mold growth and water damage under the kitchen sink caused by Water Filtration System

Under-sink water filtration systems are hailed for their convenience and promise of cleaner, healthier drinking water straight from the tap. However, what happens when these seemingly innocuous devices become the catalyst for water damage and mold growth lurking beneath your kitchen sink?

Like any plumbing fixture, under-sink filtration systems are susceptible to leaks and malfunctions. A loose connection, damaged seal, or faulty component can result in water seepage beneath the sink, leading to hidden leaks and moisture buildup.

Regular maintenance is crucial for the proper function of under-sink water filtration systems. Failure to replace filters on schedule or neglecting routine inspections can result in reduced efficiency, increased pressure on the system, and potential leaks or failures.

Moisture from leaks or condensation provides an ideal breeding ground for mold spores to thrive. Mold growth beneath the sink can spread rapidly, infiltrating nearby surfaces and posing health risks to occupants, particularly those with respiratory conditions or allergies.

Call SERVPRO of Malibu at 310-456-2135 to assist you with a water damage or mold caused by the water filtration system.

Standing Water Inside Your House Can Cause Risks

Standing water in the kitchen Severe storm caused flooding of the residence with 2 feet of water in the kitchen

Standing water inside a building is not only unsightly but also poses significant risks to both the structure and the health of its occupants.

Prolonged exposure to standing water can weaken building materials such as wood, drywall, and concrete, leading to rot, warping, and deterioration. This can compromise the stability and safety of the structure over time.

Standing water creates a conducive environment for mold and mildew growth, which not only damages surfaces but also poses health risks to occupants. Mold spores released into the air can trigger respiratory problems and exacerbate allergies and asthma.

Water accumulation near electrical outlets, appliances, or wiring poses a significant risk of electrical shock and fire. It's essential to turn off the power supply to affected areas and seek professional assistance to address the issue safely.

Standing water attracts pests such as mosquitoes, flies, and rodents, creating an unsanitary environment within the building. These pests can spread diseases and cause further damage to the property.

If you were affected by the recent storm and you have standing water in your basement call SERVPRO of Malibu right a way and we can help you extract the standing water. 310-456-2135

Why Dishwasher Leaks Can Cause Mold Growth

5/14/2023 (Permalink)

Dishwasher Leaks Inspect your dishwasher for any signs of leaks or cracks and have them repaired immediately.

A dishwasher can be an incredibly convenient appliance in any household, saving time and effort in cleaning dishes. However, like any other appliance, it can develop problems over time. One of the most common issues with dishwashers is leaks, which can lead to mold growth inside the casing of the machine

A leak in your dishwasher can be caused by several reasons, such as a faulty seal, a cracked or broken part, or a clogged drain hose. When water leaks out of your dishwasher, it can seep into the casing of the machine and create a damp environment, which is a perfect breeding ground for mold. Mold thrives in moist and dark environments, and once it begins to grow, it can spread quickly, causing health problems and unpleasant odors.

How to Detect Mold in Your Dishwasher

It's essential to detect mold growth in your dishwasher as soon as possible to prevent it from spreading and causing further damage. Here are some signs that your dishwasher may have mold:

  1. Foul odors: If you notice a musty or unpleasant smell coming from your dishwasher, it's likely that mold is growing inside.

  2. Visible mold: Check the interior of your dishwasher for any signs of mold growth. Look for black, brown, or green spots or stains on the walls, racks, and door gaskets.

  3. Allergic reactions: If you or your family members are experiencing allergy-like symptoms, such as sneezing, coughing, or itchy eyes, it could be a sign of mold growth in your dishwasher.

  2. Sagging or bulging ceilings: Ceilings that are sagging or bulging are a clear sign of water damage and should be addressed immediately.

  3. Musty odors: The presence of a musty odor can indicate that there is mold growing in your home, which can thrive in damp conditions caused by water damage.

Preventing a Ceiling Collapse from Water Damage

Preventing a ceiling collapse from water damage caused by a roof leak requires immediate action. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Find the source of the leak: Locate the source of the leak and have it repaired immediately. This may involve patching a damaged area of the roof, replacing damaged shingles, or fixing a clogged gutter.

  2. Address water damage: If you have any signs of water damage, address it promptly. This may involve replacing damaged drywall, insulation, or flooring.

  3. Prevent future leaks: To prevent future leaks, make sure your roof is properly maintained. Regularly inspect your roof for any signs of damage, keep your gutters clean, and have your roof inspected by a professional.

In conclusion, a roof leak can cause significant water damage to your home and lead to a ceiling collapse if left unchecked. It's essential to be vigilant for signs of water damage and address any issues promptly. By taking the necessary steps to prevent future leaks and maintain your roof, you can protect your home from water damage and avoid a ceiling collapse.

Rain, Rian , Go Away....

2/15/2023 (Permalink)

Water damage Heavy rain can bring its own set of challenges when it comes to household water damage.

Rain, rain, go away…that could never be a more true mantra when heavy rains fall. While water damage is typically associated with situations like flooding or plumbing malfunctions, heavy rain can bring its own set of challenges when it comes to household water damage.

  • Leaky windows and doors. Windows and doors should be sealed against Mother Nature’s elements, but their weatherproofing can age and deteriorate over time. Water can find its way into minuscule cracks and cause damage during a heavy rainfall.
  • Inadequate foundation drainage. Heavy rains can build up against the base of your home and cause leaks in your basement or crawl spaces. This can be especially common in homes at the bottom of a hill without adequate drainage around the foundation.
  • Vulnerable chimneys and skylights. Chimneys and skylights tend to be more vulnerable to heavy rains. Though they are attractive home features, seals where they meet the roof can weaken over time and be susceptible to leaking when rainfall is heavy.
  • Seeping water around the roof. Roof leaks are a leading consequence of heavy rainfall that can sneak up suddenly. Something as minor as a missing shingle or weak spot can let unwanted rainwater seep in.
  • Clogged gutters. Gutters clogged with debris can’t properly drain rainwater, which means leaks from puddles as the water is left standing against the roofline. This is why clogged gutters can cause significant home damage after heavy rains.
  • Malfunctioning sump pumps. Regular maintenance is critical to homes with sump pump systems. If issues go undetected, the pump system can get overwhelmed and cannot effectively move water away from the home.

The unfortunate result of heavy rains is water damage. And the unfortunate result of water damage in homes is a possibility of mold growth. In fact, mold can begin growing in as little as 48 hours after water damage has occurred. That’s why it’s important to stay safe and get excess water cleaned up professionally to minimize secondary damages and mold growth.

How to prevent a water damage at your house

5/14/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage Source of damage caused by hot water supply line on the 2 floor in the middle of then night

Houses are a large investment, and in order to protect that investment, you should be on the look out for potential problems and fix them before they worsen and cause a potential disaster. One of the potential problems to watch out for is water damage. But how does one go about finding water damage and potential problems related to water? It’s easier than you think!

The first step is to check your floors. No matter what kind of flooring you have, it will develop signs of water damage. For tile and wood, you want to look for cracking, buckling, and warping, and for carpet look for damp spots, gradual rises, soft spots, and the smell of mold and dampness.

Water stains on flooring around bathtubs, sinks, and toilets or water stains on ceilings or walls are an obvious sign of water damage; and unusual stains could indicate a leaky pipe or drain in the wall. Speaking of walls, cracked drywall or areas of drywall that look swollen and feel soft to the touch could also signify trouble. Peeling paint can also signify water damage, as paint loses adhesion when drywall gets wet.

Finally, watch out for rust and mold. Inspect your water heater for rust on the tank or water on the floor, as rust spots could indicate a slow leak. Corrosion around pipe connections could be caused by water seepage as well. Visual signs of active mold growth mean there’s moisture in contact with microscopic mold spores; often in the tiny nooks and crannies of your home. But don’t rely solely on sight when looking for mold! When water stagnates, mold and bacteria can grow, and produces a musty, unpleasant smell.

If you should find yourself in need of water or storm damage restoration or mold remediation, call the professionals at SERVPRO Malibu/ Topanga Canyon/Pacific Palisades  today!

Water Heater Leaks

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

Water Heater Water heater burst caused damages to residence

One of the most problematic sources of water damage in Malibu or Pacific Palisades is a leaking water heaters. Often, a failed water heater may show significant damage due to its age or environmental factors, which could present a few safety hazards to consider when checking it for leaks. After you've stopped the water, it's time to clean up.

Checking Your Water Heater

Before inspecting your water  heater for damage or leaks, be sure that you protect yourself by taking the following safety precautions:

  • When approaching a ga water heater that you suspect has failed, make sure you do not smell any gas. Since water heaters are frequently located in unventilated and confined spaces, an accumulation of gas from a small leak could build up rapidly.
  • Turn off the water heater and its water supply.
  • Do not touch the tank itself and be mindful of the pilot light. Even a leaking water heater tank can be very hot.
  • Inspect the tank’s drain valve, which is usually located near the bottom of the tank. The drain valve should be closed and screwed on securely. If there is a leak coming from the drain valve, it might need to be replaced; this is one of the most common causes of leaks in water heaters.

Cleaning Up

Once you've stopped the flow of water , you can begin to clean up:

  • Make sure electronics and appliances in the wet area are unplugged.
  • Transfer rugs and any other movable furniture and items to a dry area.
  • Dry the floor with towels, a mop, or a shop-vac.
  • Set up fans and dehumidifiers to being circulating air and removing excess moisture.

Be sure that you consider all of the safety factors and protect yourself when beginning any cleanup procedure involving a broken water heater. Investigating, repairing and mitigating the damage caused by a leaking water heater should include basic safety precautions and thorough cleaning and drying that SERVPRO would be well-equipped to manage.

How to prevent water damage?

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

Damaged wood flooring Water damage in the kitchen

Water in the home may seem harmless enough, but when it creeps across your kitchen floors in streams and causes your linoleum floors to bubble up – or when it drips, drip, drips quietly beneath your bathroom sink and triggers mold growth – it's no longer so innocent. Water damage is a leading cause of loss for homeowners and often results in costly and extensive repairs. Some common perils of water damage include the following:

  • Mold
  • Buckling floorboards
  • Rotted drywall
  • Damaged insulation
  • Structural rot and decomposition

Fortunately, most water problems can be prevented with routine inspections and maintenance. Below are a few ways in which you can prevent water damage and loss in your home.
1. Fix General Plumbing Issues

No leak is too small and no-drip too minor. If you discover a cracked or broken pipe, shut off the water valve and make the necessary repairs before the leak becomes a burst. Any water remediation team will tell you that damage from a leaking pipe is much easier to clean up than damage from a burst supply line.

2. Inspect and Maintain Appliances That Use Water

Cracked hoses, faulty connections and aging materials can all cause leaks and lead to excess water in the home if not caught in time. It doesn't hurt to check behind your washing machine once a week and before starting a load for pools of water, or to check behind your dishwasher for moisture. The two minutes it takes you to check can save you hundreds to thousands of dollars in pipe cleanup costs.

3. Get Your HVAC System Inspected and Maintained

Many homeowners don't think about their HVAC systems being the cause of water damage in the home, but the truth is that these systems are a huge culprit of moisture build-up and damage. You can keep your system in good working order and prevent costly issues by having a professional come in once or twice a year to inspect the unit and make any necessary repairs.

Water in the home can be costly and damaging. You can prevent water damage and the need to hire a SERVPRO Malibu/Topanga Canyon/ Pacific Palisades, water damage cleanup team by following the above advice.

What can you do to keep water damage to a minimum? Read on for four steps that you can take to protect your property and valuables from the burst.

1. Turn Off Water Sources

Leaving water run when there is already a moisture problem can make matters worse. Turn off all water sources at or near any affected areas as soon as possible. This helps prevent a larger flooding issue and minimizes the risk for mold growth.

2. Fix the Broken Pipe or Pipes

If you can, repair the pipe or pipes yourself or call-in professional help to do so. The more time bursting pipes go without being replaced, the longer you will have moisture concerns deal with.

3. Call a Remediation Service

A water damage restoration company can typically survey any existing wreckage and restore your property to the best of the team’s ability. In some cases, even broken valuables and wet papers can be salvaged. Talk to the technicians about what their restoration plan is after they have surveyed the damage.

4. Keep Records

If you have a homeowner's insurance policy on your property, keep track of all destruction and repairs that occur. Snapping photos, saving receipts and taking other actions to record the restoration process from start to finish will help you when you go to file an insurance claim in the future. Talk to your agent if you have specific questions about your coverage.

Signs of a water damaged ceiling

water marks Water stains are very common to spot on water damaged ceiling.

A water damaged ceiling is unsightly and dangerous. Before you can repair the ceiling you must locate the issue that is causing the water damage first. If you repair the ceiling without fixing any underlying issues you are asking for a repeat situation. If you plan to locate the source of the problem yourself, be sure to shut off the electricity and water flow in your home.

Telltale Signs of Water Damage

“Sweat” stains -

If it looks like there is a darker shade of your paint on your ceiling, you most likely have the start of a water leak. This causes a sweat-like appearance on your ceiling and you should take action before it gets worse.

Water stains -

Usually brown in color, water stains mean there is a leak or there was a leak. Regardless of how big or small, the water stain is, the leak should be located and stopped. Water stains will usually happen from a leaky roof, overflowing of sinks, tubs, and toilets on the second floor, and cracked pipes.

Ceiling Bubbles -

If you notice your ceiling swelling or bubbling, there is a buildup of moisture in the drywall. If this is not taken care of the ceiling can collapse, causing a dangerous and messy situation. It may seem like a good idea to poke the bubble, but there can be more water than expected, so it is best to let the professionals take care of it.

Mold Growth:

If you see mold, you can be sure you have water damage, which is why it must be addressed immediately. Mold is extremely dangerous and within 48 hours it can grow and spread, to other parts of the home.

4/7/2021 (Permalink)

A shower pan leak is a common reason for finding water on the ceiling below your bathroom. What is a shower pan and why would it leak?

• A shower pan is a waterproof barricade located between the subfloor and shower tile. It catches water that leaks below the tile and funnels it into the drain. It is typically made from vinyl or lead and can deteriorate as it ages.
• If there is a shower pan leak, common indicators include separation between the bathroom wall and floor and missing grout or mold on the shower floor. The telltale sign is water on the ceiling or space directly below your shower.

First Floor Showers

When you have a shower pan leak, the key is to act immediately when you notice a wet ceiling below the bathroom. But, what happens when your shower is on the first floor and you do not have a basement? How can you tell if a shower or bathtub leak is an issue then?

• If you have a crawlspace, check the ceiling down there every once in a while for water damage. Some indications of a serious problem include black, wet wood and hanging stalactites that resemble icicles.
• For houses on a concrete slab, water from a leaky shower travels along the floors or walls of nearby areas. Be vigilant looking for wetness that does not result from an obvious spill.

The key to protecting your home from a shower or bathtub leak is to act fast. The above signs that indicate a shower pan problem. Creating the Ideal Drying Conditions for Water Restoration in your home.

5/17/2020 (Permalink)

Roof Leak Roof leak can cause a lots of damage to a house.

In dealing with any property restoration emergency, having access to the correct equipment goes a long way to reducing your claims loss expense. This principle is especially true in situations involving water, which can deteriorate contents, structure, and fittings overnight. One of the essential methods we use to reduce losses in your property is understanding how to dry your structure and contents properly. That means using moisture detection sensors, creating the right atmosphere for efficient drying and bringing in industrial extraction equipment.

The task of water restoration in your home is built on the foundations of careful psychrometric measurements taken regularly to control losses. Increasing the temperature in a closed area, for example, allows the interior air to take on more moisture- this process can increase the efficiency of air-moving equipment. However, to create optimum drying conditions, a SERVPRO technician must take regular readings using thermal hygrometers to ensure that the indoor air is not overloaded with moisture, which can slow drying times.

While restoration is underway, a SERVPRO technician may tent off the affected area to gain better control of the indoor environment. High levels of humidity, which are a natural byproduct of drying procedure, can also create ideal conditions for microbial growth. Leaving a humid environment overnight can lead to further damages. SERVPRO technicians may create an open system, by opening windows or allowing ventilation to exchange humid interior air with drier outdoor air, to prevent secondary issues like mold growth from occurring.

Using our training in combination with advanced drying equipment allows SERVPRO technicians to dry a structure without risking secondary damages confidently. By creating the ideal drying conditions, the expense of your claim is significantly reduced, and your home has the best chance of returning to its preloss conditions. We can forward the paperwork to your insurance adjuster to ease the claims process and let you get back to your everyday life with as little inconvenience as possible.

For advanced restoration services that get your home back to its preloss condition, contact SERVPRO Malibu/Topanga Canoyn/ Pacific Palisades 310-456-2135

Septic backp up Septic back up at a residence in Malibu caused damage to the residence. Cat 3 water was coming from every drain in the residence.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 13.7% of all water used in homes is the result of water leaking from broken pipes. Because of the potential for water damage wasted water and higher water bills, it can be important to seek prompt water pipe repair if you have a leak. However, water damage can come from many different sources that can carry different levels of risk and require different methods of cleanup and water damage restoration. The IIRC classifies water damage into three categories based on the contamination level of the water and the difficulty of removal.

  1. Category 1: Clean Water

Clean water originates from a source that isn't contaminated by chemicals or biological agents, such as clean water from a bathtub, toilet or leaking appliance. If the standing water remains for more than 48 hours it can progress to category 2. For this reason, it can be important to address standing water and sources of leaks, such as a pipe that needs water pipe repair, promptly.

  1. Category 2: Grey Water

Greywater may be contaminated with mold, bacteria or chemicals. Sources of greywater can include dirty water from dishwashers and washing machines, leaking water beds, or a leak from a toilet that contains urine. Standing water from this category that has been standing for more than 48 hours can become a category 3.

  1. Category 3: Black Water

Blackwater may be contaminated with biological organisms, bacteria or toxins. Sources of black water may include a broken toilet that contains feces, backup from a sewer system, and water from streams and rivers that have flooded.

Whether you have a broken pipe in need of water pipe repair or flood damage from a storm, the longer you wait to address the issue, the more serious it can become. For this reason, it can be wise to contact a water removal professional in SERVPRO Malibu/Topanga Canyon/ Pacific Palisades promptly.

Acting Fast After Water Damage Water Timeline

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

The longer you wait, the more damage is done.

It's important to act fast after you experience water damage in order to keep secondary damage to a minimum.

Within Minutes of the damage: Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path and water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and your belongings. Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets. Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

The First 24 hours: Affected drywall begins to swell and break down. Metal surfaces affected most likely will begin to tarnish. Furniture begins to swell and crack. Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain. A musty odor can appear.

Within The First Week: Mold and mildew most likely will grow and spread. Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp. Metal begins to rust and corrode. Furniture warps and shows signs of mold. Paint begins to blister. Wood flooring swells and warps. Serious biohazard contamination is possible.

More Than 1 Week: Restoration time and cost increase dramatically; replacing contaminated materials and structural rebuilding may be extensive. Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants pose serious risks to occupants

The longer you wait, the more damage will occur, which becomes more costly.

Recovering From Water Backup

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

Steps To Clean Up From A Water Backup

  • Remove standing water to prevent structural damage or use sump pumps to remove excess water.
  • Dry all wet carpets, rugs, and personal belongings to prevent mold growth.
  • Do not flush toilets or attempt to drain tubs and sinks – It is best to just not use the water supply system in your home until the problem has been corrected.
  • Do not use chemicals in an attempt to unclog the draining system quickly and easily. They can damage your pipes and sewer lines.
  • Keep children and pets away from the affected area.
  • If it is safe, shut off the power. Otherwise, don’t go near electrical equipment.
  • Wear protective clothing: gloves, eyeglasses, rubber boots and a facemask when in direct contact with water backup.
  • Open windows to allow fresh air in and ventilate well to remove any unpleasant odors.
  • Use the services of a professional water mitigation company to sanitize, dry and prevent mold growth.

What Causes Water Backup?

5/13/2019 (Permalink)

Back up in a bathroom

Water backup mostly occurs when the water around the property’s foundation exceeds the capacity of the removal systems to drain it. It can occur from surface water seeping into foundation walls or sewer systems overflowing up through drains.

Preventing Water Backup

  1. Maintain gutters and downspouts, keeping them free of debris and leaves and repairing them if they are sagging.
  2. Inspect your gutters' capacity - after fifteen minutes of heavy rain, if water overflows the gutters, you should install additional downspouts.
  3. Extend downspouts at least ten feet away from the house
  4.  Adjust landscaping and irrigation so that water flows away from the foundation.
  5. Drain subsurface groundwater and stormwater with a sump pump system that has battery backup and replacement warnings.
  6. Run your sump pump every few months and clean it annually before the rainy season.
  7. Prevent backflow of sanitary sewer water by installing backflow valves and standpipes at all basement drain locations, including sinks and toilets.
  8. Prepare your basement, garage. Or other storage areas "just in case" by raising your washer, dryer, water heater, electrical wiring and personal items above your typical water backup levels.

Category 2 Water Loss

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

Cat 2 Water Loss

No two water losses are alike, including the categories they reside in and each situation must be treated based on the unique needs of the environment. When looking for possible contaminants to determine a category of loss you have to take into consideration the condition of the property you are working with and also the source of water

A Category 2 water loss refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological, or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when exposed or consumed. Known as "Gray Water," this type of water damage carries microorganisms and nutrients of microorganisms and can cause illness.

Sources of Category 2 water losses include toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure, and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Do's and Don’ts for Water Damage Cleanup

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage Clean up

Do’s

  1. Disconnect the main power supply to eliminate the risk of electrocution. At the same time, unplug and remove all electronics as well as pieces of furniture that can be easily moved. The faster you get these items out of your way, the easier it will be for you to clean up.
  2. Get rid of as much water as you can before the professionals arrive. You can use buckets to throw away excess water, towels to soak up extra water from hard surfaces and furniture. As long as all your sewers are working, you can drain away excess water.

Don’t

  1. Do not attempt to lift heavy furniture or carpet, as that is the job of the professionals and you do not want
  2. Do not use toxic chemical agents which you are not familiar with and do not use toxic cleaning agents without following the necessary safety measures.
  3. Do not use bleach or cleaning agents on areas that are still waterlogged and contain water. This may result in further damage.

Though the professionals will be on the site quickly to help you, keep these do’s and don’ts in mind so you can limit thedamage caused to your home by flooding.

Certified Water Restoration Contractors

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Wet Walls

Certified water restoration contractors are required to meet a strict set of standards, dictated by insurance companies and industry organizations to restore the property to its preloss condition. If a restoration project is done improperly, it can result in mold growth or other toxic hazards that can cause serious health issues for the occupants, therefore, it is important to choose a company that knows the industry standards and has a stellar reputation in their community.

Before choosing the right restoration contractor, take these four tips into consideration:

Tip #1: Do Not Choose a Friend or Family Member in the Construction Business

We’ve all heard the horror stories about someone’s friend who had their savvy brother-in-law with a little construction experience fix something that's gone wrong at their home or business, and it turned out to be a disaster. It is never a good idea to try to save money and cut corners by hiring a friend or family member to make building repairs that are totally beyond their skills. It usually harms the relationships and costs you a lot more time and money!

Tip #2: Do Not Choose the Contractor Who Built Your Home or Building

General contractors and construction companies who mostly build new construction do not have adequate insurance restoration experience even though they think they do. They lack the proper equipment, correct experience and certified training required to perform water mitigation, smoke odor removal, content restorative cleaning, deodorizing and handling techniques. Also most of the time, they do not understand the proper methods for reconstruction and repairs under these unique conditions, not to mention how to identify and deal with the hazardous materials and dangerous structural conditions, after a disaster.

Tip #3: Do Not Choose a Contractor Who Has Little, or No Experience Working With Insurance Companies

As the insurance policyholder, it is your responsibility to disclose any loss to the insurance company and provide the necessary documentation required to process the claim. You will need an estimate from a restoration company that meets the strict insurance company requirements, created using specific estimating software. If the estimate format does not meet the insurance company standards, it may be rejected.

Tip #4: Do Not Choose a Cleaning Service

Carpet cleaners and house cleaning crews are great for every day, small-scale cleaning job. But when it comes to flooding, fire, and smoke damage, they don’t have the technical capabilities or knowledge to remove high levels of moisture that infiltrates the floors and walls. In not mitigating the damage properly, it can cause dangerous secondary damages to accumulate in a matter of days. Smoke and ash damage also goes far beyond the soot that is left on walls, ceilings, and furniture. If not cleaned and deodorized properly, it can leave behind microscopic toxins and fine particulates that can be hazardous to the health of the occupants.

Years of experience and extensive training are required to be a certified restoration contractor, and obviously, there are many good reasons for that. Give us a call with any questions.

Mitigating Water Damage

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

To Mitigate or Remediate?

Mitigation is often confused with restoration but they are truly not the same thing.
Water mitigation stops the water from spreading. In other words, help in reducing the cause of water issue to prevent any further damage.
Remediation is taking action to reduce, isolate, and remove all contamination from an environment by preventing further reproduction and spreading of contaminant. Simply stated, remediation is the process of clean up and disinfection.
Important steps to mitigate water damage:
• Remove rugs and unattached floor coverings
• Lift or remove furniture to prevent further damage
• Open drawers, closets, and cabinets to enhance drying if items inside were affected
• If available start extraction by using a wet vac or other machines able to extract water
• Place air movers and Dehumidifiers as soon as possible if you have them, If not give us a call.

Water Damage Initial Steps

Water Damage

Initial steps to take when Water damage occurs:

  1. Remove furniture, boxes or other household items that either got wet or are in danger of getting wet. In many cases, items will be packed-out and taken to an offsite warehouse where further drying and restoration processes can be done.
  2. Assess the moisture or find where the water has gone. Water travels through most surfaces and will settle at the lowest point. In most cases, most of the time you won’t feel the wetness so you will need to use some moisture detection equipment
  3. Extract water if it’s sitting there. You do not want to wait for it to continue being absorbed.
  4. Dry the areas that were affected. Use air movers and dehumidifiers so that the moisture can be captured and expelled so more damage does not occur.
  5. Or… you can just call us…

Water, Water and More Water

Flooring Water Damage

There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night and finding your flooring soaked with water

First, DON'T PANIC!

It is important to try and find where it is coming from. Once you know, turn off the water.

So many people think that once the water is off the damage is done. This is not the case. It is important to fix the source so the damage can be remediated properly. It is common for a remediation company to come out and start the dry-out process but once the water is turned back on the source can re-leak and cause the damage to happen all over again.

Please make sure you communicate with your remediation company where you are in terms of fixing the source so they can determine how to help.

Containment and Equipment

This is a common story...

Jackie and her family returned home from a trip to find standing water all over her downstairs. Her wood floors were soaked.

Our certified technicians arrived within an hour and began extracting the water in the home.  The technicians moved all of the client's contents and prepared two drying zones. Plastic barriers were placed to promote quick and efficient drying for the structure. The wood floor was removed where it was damaged and unsalvageable. Baseboards and drywall were also removed to prevent mold growth. Air movers and dehumidifiers were used for 3 days to dry the rest of structure, inside cavities and flooring.

We limited the damage by acting fast and 40% of the floor was saved. The family was allowed to stay at their residence during the drying process and we used barriers to separate working/drying areas.

Most of the time when our technicians arrive the problem is bigger than what the homeowner could see in plain sight. Disinfect

Once your home has been examined by a professional, it is time you take some measures on your own. Once you have successfully disinfected your home, take measures to prevent mold growth. Use good quality Concrobium throughout the area for mold control. As Concrobium can be toxic, it is important you take necessary safety precautions while applying it on your walls and furniture. Apply a thin layer of Concrobium and let it dry overnight. If you have kids, you would want to start mold control one room at a time. When Concrobium dries, it forms a thin layer and prevents the growth of mold or fungi.

Dispose Damaged Goods

Before throwing out all your old furniture, it is essential you properly examine it first. Create different piles according to the level of damage caused. Take whatever you can to recycling centers and if you find something you can donate, go ahead. Water Damage Restoration

Life isn’t exactly fair to some of us and at times we may end up in situations where we lose everything. One such example is damage to your home because of a flood, water overflow, or other water related damage where you lose all your valuables and essentials. This is where water damage restoration comes in that helps to restore your home to its original state and pre-water damage condition. To understand this better, let’s take a look at the water damage restoration process.

Loss Assessment

The first and most important stage in water damage restoration is of course loss evaluation. In this process, restoration companies perform a quick but thorough inspection of your home to determine the extent of the damage, estimate overall restoration costs, and list the items which have to be repaired or replaced.

Decontamination

After the evaluation is completed and overall estimates have been provided, the process of drying and decontamination begins. This process includes the use of subfloor drying equipments, scrubbers, dehumidifiers, and blowers to dry the entire area and specify pockets where contamination has been detected.

Monitoring

This is the last phase of the damage restoration process and usually involves checking if all the equipment is in working order, assessing if the personnel involved are qualified for the job, and checking if the drying equipment is set up properly.

Has your home suffered water damage as well? If so, then it would be a good option to opt for professional water damage restoration Malibu services.

Water damage Pacific Palisades

3/19/2015 (Permalink)

Imagine coming home from a restful vacation and finding part of you home full of water. Not very likely? You may be surprised to learn that water damage accounted for $9.1 million worth of property loss between 2007 and 2009, according to the American Insurance Association. While living in Pacific Palisades means that you are unlikely to suffer from excessive rainfall, leaks within your home are not uncommon; it is estimated that 14% of all water coming into American homes is lost due to leaks. Even a small crack in a water pipe, measuring no more than 1/8 inch can leak as much as 250 gallons of water in a day.

Not only can water itself cause extensive damage to your home and your property, it also facilitates the growth of mold which can contaminate the air with its spores, produce an unpleasant odor and cause health problems. If you encounter a flood or a leak, then you need to call in a professional drying and cleaning service who can remove the water and undertake a clean up operation to get your home back in order.

The first step is to stop the ingress of additional water and then set about water extraction using gas powered pumps. Infrared cameras may be deployed to detect water in hard to reach areas. Hygrometers and moisture detectors can then show how much moisture remains in walls, floors, and in the air. Then dehumidifiers and high speed air movers can be moved in to start the drying process.

Dehumidifiers work on the basis that cold air holds less moisture than warmer air. As the dehumidifier draws air in, it is cooled with a refrigerant, condensation occurs and the water is collected in  a tray and then the air is heated before being blown back into the room. It may look straight forward but there is a lot of science behind the positioning and types of dehumidifiers used to produce the best results in any particular location.

Application of antimicrobials and fungicides prevents the growth of any molds, mildew or bacteria. If mold has already started to appear. A full remediation process will be required to isolate and eliminate it. Your water removal proffessionals will also be able to handle the clean up of your possessions or dispose of those which are unable to be brought back to good condition. Experts in a variety of methods, including wet and dry cleaning, according to the items needing to be restored, they will do their best to restore your property to its former condition and leave it looking as if the water damage had not occurred. They will also prepare a full report for submission of a claim to your insurers, with a detailed inventory of your possessions backed up by photographs. Suffering from water damage is an unpeasant experience, but with the right help and support, it can be handled with the minimum of disruption to your life.

Tips for Limiting Water Damage

3/19/2015 (Permalink)

Water damage is a serious issue.  For the period 2004-2008, compensation for losses incurred from water damage was the second highest type of claim on homeowner insurance policies. Even a small crack in a water pipe can release a huge amount of water in a relatively short time. Problems caused by water are seven times more common than fire damage and six times more common than burglary, so it makes sense to be aware of some of the causes of leaks and flooding in the home and what you can do to prevent them happening to you.

Clogged drains and toilets

Soap residues, grease, hair, food waste, and other items can all contribute to clogs in drains and toilets. The build up is usually gradual and can be detected by slow drainage. Any such problem should be dealt with quickly as a back surge of contaminated water can be very unpleasant and constitutes a significant health hazard. Clean your drains regularly and make sure that unsuitable items and substances are not flushed down the toilet.

Pipework

Over time, pipes begin to degrade and cracks can appear. The natural shifting of the foundations of your house can also put stresses on to your pipework that can cause cracking and lead to leakage. Where pipes are hidden beneath flooring or within walls, the first signs may be damp patches appearing. These should always be investigated to determine their cause and enable remedial action to be undertaken in a timely fashion.

Washing machines

The intake hoses to your washing machine are always under pressure and are a common source of leaks. Make sure the connections are tight and, if you have plastic or rubber hoses, it is better to replace them with reinforced steel braided ones. In any event, the hoses should be replaced every five years. When you are leaving the house empty for a few days, turn off the water supply to your washer.

Water Heater

Water heaters can corrode over time and the points where water enters and leaves are prone to rusting. The typical life span of a water heater is about ten years. Inspect your heater regularly and replace it if you observe signs of corrosion. Look for a heater with a long warranty.

Overflowing Drain Pans

Air conditioning and heating systems have drainage pans to collect condensation and other waste water which can overflow if not emptied from time to time. Clogs can occur if routine maintenance is not carried out. Your AC should be regularly serviced to ensure it is working efficiently and inspecting the drainage line is an important part of this inspection.
